HARYANA GOVERNOR WELCOMES 'HARYANA GOLDEN JUBILEE MOUNTANEERING GIRLS' TEAM
Haryana Governor, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, today welcomed 29-member Haryana Golden Jubilee mountaineering girls’ team, which scaled the 5,289-metre Friendship Peak in Manali region of Himachal Pradesh, at Haryana Raj Bhavan, here.The team, comprising 25 students from 22 districts of Haryana and four staff members from the State, was flagged off by Chief Minister, Mr. Manohar Lal, on May 18, 2017, and arrived in Chandigarh today.
The
Governor also flagged off a 43-member mountaineering expedition team
comprising 40 students from 18 Sainik Schools and three staff members to
Friendship Peak.Welcoming the
teams, Prof. Solanki lauded Sainik School, Kunjpura and the School
Education Department for organising mountaineering expeditions during
the Golden Jubilee of the State. “Such expeditions will also inculcate
the spirit of leadership in students and bring about awareness regarding
the need to keep our mountains clean,” he added.
Principal,
Sainik School, Kunjpura, Col. Y.S. Parmar, said that the 43-member team
would spend three days at Manali for acclimatisation and procurement of
stores and equipment. After spending a night at Bakar Thach, the team
would trek over cold and snowy mountain slopes which are devoid of
vegetation. The team would establish base camp at Lady Leg, where the
members would be trained in snow and ice craft techniques, including
glacier walking, step making, rescue techniques and various climbing
techniques. The students would also be apprised of mountain hazards,
weather forecasting, and flora and fauna of the area.
After
week-long training and acclimatisation the summit camp would be set up.
The climbers would finally hoist the National Flag, Sainik School
Society and School Flag on top of Friendship Peak, he added.
